RESEARCH IN SURVEYING, MAPPING, AND GEODESY APPLICATION OF CORIOLIS FORCE TO GEODETIC MEASUREMENTS.
Abstract
The Coriolis force may be used to determine true North. Following general principles and accuracy considerations, mechanical devices are discussed. These include a modified Foucault pendulum, vibrating masses, the Foucault directional gyroscope, and a cross-shaped vibrator. The posibility of using the human ear as a sensitive detector is also suggested. Devices based on fluid motion, as well as some other devices described in the literature, are discussed. (Author)
