TROPICAL SERVICE LIFE OF ELECTRONIC PARTS AND MATERIALS.

Abstract

Failure analysis of the CK12 capacitor indicated three failure modes: (1) transient increases in dissipation factor; (2) permanent changes in dissipation factor; and (3) permanent changes in dissipation factor accompanied by a change in capacity. From a failure effects analysis, the magnitude of change would not effect a filtering or by-pass application. A coupling application is more critical and each circuit would have to be treated individually. Failure mechanisms for the first two failure modes are the result of moisture and salt. The third failure mode has a mechanism which may be the result of an aging phenomenon (physical strain relief). Acceleration test planning was completed. (Author)
