POLYVINYL CARBAZOLE,

Abstract

A process for the polymerization of Vinylcarbazole to foamed polymer granules of K values 65-87, and softening range 200-220 C has been developed up to a scale of 2 kg/batch. The operations required to mold these granules into 12 x 12 x 1 inch panels of densities in the range 0.04 - 0.2 g/ml are described. Small hemispherical moldings have also been obtained. These moldings can be laminated with fiber glass and postformed. Dimensional distortion is less than 1% in 240 hrs. at 200 C for material of density 0.05 - 0.07 g/cc, and at 170 C for material of 0.16 - 0.18 g/cc. The material is unaffected by cold dilute HCl and H2SO4, ethyl acetate, cold or hot n-hexane, cyclohexane or petroleum ether. It is soluble in CHCl3, CH2Cl2, benzene, dioxan and pyridine, and swollen and partially dissolved by ether, toluene, xylene, dioxan and tetrahydrofurane. Blocks of polyvinylcarbazole of much improved quality and appearance have been made using an improved polymerization process and monomer sufficiently free of certain impurities. A quantity of the material has been made for determination of various physical properties. (Author)
