HONEYCOMB CYLINDER ANALYSIS.

Abstract

This report contains a method for the analysis of a cylinder which has a wall consisting of a honeycomb core covered by two facing sheets. The cylinder is loaded with a crimping moment, shear, pressure (either external or internal), and an axial load. This loading pattern is typical for discontinuities existing at junctions of the cylindrical part of a pressure vessel and its end closures. The basic approach involves the consideration of the equations of equilibrium from which the differential equation for the deflection is determined. Shear deformations are considered since, in the case of a cylinder constructed from a sandwich with a relatively low transverse shear rigidity, the shear distortion may not be negligible. Buckling of the cylinder due to axial load is not considered. Methods for determination of values for constants appearing in the equations were obtained from various sources. (Author)
