SEVERITY OF NATURAL FLAWS AS FRACTURE ORIGINS.

Abstract

The purpose of this program is to measure the severity of the following types of natural flaws: semi-elliptical surface cracks of various length-to-depth ratios, surface cracks of irregular shape, multiple cracks, and quick-opening cracks, which are not open cracks until highly stressed. The effect of crack shape was studied in D6-AC steel at high and low strength levels. New Ti-6Al-4V material was obtained that was suitable for heat treatment to the high strength level. In addition, to the development of means for estimating the severity of natural flaws, these studies are providing a better understanding of the surface-cracked specimen as a tool for measuring fracture toughness values applicable to design of hardware.
