LOW WEIGHT FOCUSING SCHEMES FOR TWT.

Abstract

This program is for developing a permanent magnet focused lightweight (5lb) traveling wave tube with a 5 db noise figure, 20 db small signal gain, and 8 to 12 Gc frequency range. Three different SRPM package designs were evaluated and a fourth proposed. Peak magnetic fields in the cathode region of 1500 gauss were achieved with an average magnetic field of 900 gauss. Best electrical results were achieved in a 4.7 lb package type III with a 740 gauss field over the cathode and a 500 gauss field over the output region. Best results also were achieved with tube C-5 in a 4.7 lb package. Noise figure less than 6.5 db was achieved over a bandwidth equivalent to the program bandwidth from 7-10.5 Gc. The development was continued of the theory of wave propagation on focused electron streams. In the limiting case of an abrupt and exact reversal of the magnetic field it was shown that there is no transference of excitation among the modes. A more general proof of this type requires an orthogonality among the beam modes which has not yet been found. Expressions for the interesting physical quantities in terms of the mode amplitudes are given. (Author)
