THE EFFECTS OF PRACTICE ON THE PERFORMANCE OF BASIC ARMOR SKILLS AT NIGHT.
Abstract
For this study, ten tasks were selected which were judged to be basic armor skills; all ten were performed on the M48A2 tank. Each week eight trainees (holdover tank commanders, who are among the most proficient graduates of armor advanced individual training) were drawn from units in the US Army Training Center, Armor, and were tested on one task or one group of related tasks. From one to seven night test sessions were held on each task. Nighttime practice on all but three tasks was obtained only during the test trials. During test sessions illumination varied from full component red lighting to complete darkness for tasks performed inside the turret, and from high to very low natural illumination for tasks performed outside the turret.
