NUCLEAR FUEL (CARBIDE) CLAD THERMIONIC CONVERTERS. VOLUME 1.

Abstract

Thermionic converters fueled with Re-clad carbide cermets were studied in this program. Two thermionic modules, each module being an assembly of two series-connected converters with a single common cesium reservoir, were designed, fabricated, and tested. Two single converters were subsequently designed, fabricated, and tested. In all these tests, the cylindrical emitters were heated internally by electron bombardment. Volume I of this report presents descriptions of work in the areas of preliminary evaluation of the concept, compatibility of BeO with Cs vapor, general design of the module and converter, and module and converter thermionic performance. Volume II presents supplementary data on module and converter details, fuel fabrication, compatibility testing of fueled emitters, and post-operation examinations of emitters operated in the modules and single converters.
