X-RAY AND NEUTRON DIFFRACTION STUDIES OF ZEOLITE INCLUSION COMPLEXES AND OTHER SUBSTANCES.

Abstract

Zeolite inclusion complexes: The I2, H2O, SO2, Kr, and Xe sorbates of 5A synthetic zeolite were studied. Nearly six I2 molecules are sorbed in positions near the 8-ring windows, so that each molecule has a partial charge transfer bond to an oxygen atom of the zeolite cage. Interatomic distances are related to those found in solid iodine. In the water structure twenty water molecules form a distorted pentagonal dodecahedral cage as in chlorine hydrate, while eight more form a cube inside the sodalite unit and additional molecules occupy positions in the cage window openings. Structures were obtained for the SO2, Kr, and Xe sorbates, that of SO2 being somewhat uncertain. Other substances: Neutron work on FeTi and CoTi, to detect antiferromagnetism at low temperatures, gave negative results. An attempt to determine the atomic arrangement in Ti3O with neutron data was unsuccessful. X-Ray work on TiMn3 and I(V-Ni-Si) yielded approximate lattice constants but no structure as yet. The crystal structure of the delta phase, determined earlier, was refined. Also determined were three new structures: E(TiNiSi), isotypic with PbCl2, M(Nb-Ni-Al), orthorhombic and closely related to the P phase, and D(V-Fe-Si), tetragonal, 56 atoms. The latter two have not yet been refined. An over-all study of compounds in the sigma phase group, and Laves and beta-tungsten alloys, has allowed some generalizations to be made concerning interatomic distances and atomic radii in relation to atomic coordination.
