EVALUATION OF ELASTOMERS FOR ARMY APPLICATIONS DURING FY65.

Abstract

New elastomers and related materials were evaluated. Ethylene propylene terpolymer elastomers were proven useful for military applications because of their low cost, good aging resistance at temperatures to 300 F., inherent ozone resistance coupled with excellent flexibility and resistance to embrittlement at temperatures of -55 F. and -85 F., respectively. Hydrin 100 (an epichlorohydrin homopolymer) and hydrin 200 (a copolymer of epichlorohydrin and ethylene oxide) were found of interest because of their good aging resistance at temperatures to 300 F., low swell (8%) in hot petroleum oil and, in the case of Hydrin 200, flexibility and resistance to embrittlement at -50 F. A urethane elastomer possessing oil resistance (14% swell in hot petroleum oil), good elastic recovery, and outstanding low temperature properties (non brittle U-85 F. and flexible M-67 F.) synthesized by a contractor was evaluated.
