LO-TEMP THERMIONIC PLASMA STUDY.
Abstract
The effort during this period has been directed toward understanding the effects of a multi-gas plasma on the electrode surfaces of a dispenser emitter thermionic energy converter. With cylindrical diode vehicles using more than one emitter type, the reactions of noble gas overpressure on the electron emission and evaporant transport properties were studied. Improved stability of low work function collector surfaces were achieved as a result. The hypothesis of the semi-conductor nature of the collector surfaces was extended to include the possibility of film junctions. In addition, a multi-electrode vehicle was used to provide both reference statistics for the electrode surfaces under pure cesium conditions and to evaluate the effects of three collector substrates.
