ADDITION AND SUBSTITUTION PRODUCTS OF OXYGEN FLUORIDES.

Abstract

Two new oxygen fluorides, O5F2 and O6F2, were produced. Methods of preparation and some of the properties of these new oxygen fluorides are described. Thermal stability, sensitivity, solubility, and for O5F2 the epr spectrum also, were determined. New data on characterization of the previously known oxygen fluorides were obtained. Free radicals in oxygen fluorides were characterized. Chemical reactions of O4F2 and N2F4 and O3 were studied and additional data on solubility of O4F2 were obtained. The chemistry of OF2 was investigated further. Photochemical reactions of OF2 with O2 and Kr and the explosiveness of OF 2 with SiO2 and TNT are described. Diffusion flames of OF 2 with various substances were obtained and characterized. The possibility of the existence of cyclic polymers of oxygen is discussed. The nonexistence of nitrogen fluorides with numerous N-N bonds is explained. (Author)
