A PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION OF CORONA DISCHARGE PHENOMENA.

Abstract

A preliminary study of corona breakdown between highly charged moving aerosols and grounded objects was conducted. The experimental facility was improved to the extent that the current carried by the aerosol, before and after a grounded needle, can be accurately measured. From the data obtained, it is evident that the moving aerosol induces ionization which liberates charge in excess of its own charge value. The induced corona current was shown to reproduce the aerodynamic structure characteristic of highly underexpanded nozzles exhausting into still air. It was shown that downstream of the corona discharge there exists a mixture of positive and negative charge carriers whose net charge value depends on the position of the corona needle with respect to the aerosol jet. These downstream charge carriers seem to have a definite spatial distribution which incorporates aerosol particles charged with a polarity opposite to that of the same particles upstream of the corona breakdown region. Photographic observation disclosed that the induced corona breakdown preferentially takes place along selected regions determined by the aerodynamics of the aerosol jet. A model is presented which justifies all observations, but which is not yet completely established. (Author)
