ADVANCED METHODS TO TEST THIN GAGE MATERIALS.
Abstract
Research is reported on tensile testing of thin gage materials in simulated aerospace environments. Tentative standard specimen configurations are presented for the tensile testing of thin gage sheet materials at room temperature, cryogenic and elevated temperatures. The effect of specimen geometry on tensile properties is discussed. Specimen preparation involved gang-drilling and gang-milling techniques for super alloys and refractory metals. A selective electropolishing techniques was used in edge preparation of very thin specimens. A specimen gripping device was developed for the tensile testing of materials as thin as 0.001 inch between -320 and 2500 F. A major achievement was the development of a complete system for the tensile testing of thin gage sheet, joints, and composite materials (0.015 to 0.002 inch thick) between -320 to 4000 F. A method is presented for the determination of true stress. (Author)
