SURVEY OF VIDEO AND TELEMETRY DATA COMPRESSION TECHNIQUES,

Abstract

An industry survey of data compression techniques was conducted. The purpose of this study was to examine the theory and application of these techniques and the results which have been achieved. This report identifies the pertinent terminology and various industry studies of data compression. For each technique, a description, a theoretical discussion, results, limitations, and potentials are presented. Comparison of data compression methods is made on the basis of gross and net compression figures. Applications for data compression systems are discussed. Development of these systems, coupled with the need for bandwidth reduction of spacecraft data, indicate a strong potential for these systems. (Author)
