ADVANCED SPACEBORNE DOSIMETRY INSTRUMENTATION.

Abstract

This report presents the complete results of two years of effort by the Air Force Weapons Laboratory, Biophysics Branch, in the field of space-radiation dosimetry. Three specific dosimetry systems, the Gemini type, the Air Force satellite type, and the manned space systems survey meter, are discussed in detail, and one experimental chamber design employing a gas-multiplication technique is fully explored. Electrical and mechanical diagrams of each system developed through this effort are presented along with illustrated details of dosimeter assembly, testing, and calibration. A complete survey of the theoretical background utilized in the design and testing effort is presented. A considerable amount of experimental data, much of it collected in testing before the Gemini 4 mission and during the flight of the spacecraft, is displayed. (Author)
