SOLVENT INTERACTION WITH FREE RADICALS.

Abstract

The HBr-olefin reaction has not been examined for solvent effects, and this work was undertaken to see if such effects do occur. Two series of experiments were involved. In series I the role of solvent in altering the cis/trans ratio of products in adding HBr to the 1-bromoalkenes of 4, 5 and 6 membered rings was examined. In series II the effect of solvent upon the relative reactivity of cyclopentene vs. cyclohexene was studied. Solvent effects were noted in series I but none were observed in series II except for a secondary effect (byproduct formation). (Author)
