THERMOELECTRIC AND THERMOMAGNETIC COOLING - A LITERATURE SURVEY,

Abstract

This report is a review of the current state-of-the-art of thermoelectric and thermomagnetic refrigeration. A brief history of the development of these kinds of refrigeration, and the particular problems associated with thermoelectric and thermomagnetic refrigeration at cryogenic temperatures and possible methods of overcoming them are discussed. Equations describing the performance of thermoelectric and thermomagnetic refrigerators are presented and, to a limited degree, derived. The microscopic and macroscopic properties of materials which dictate whether they are or are not good thermoelectric or thermomagnetic materials are also discussed. The steps to be followed in design of a thermoelectric refrigerator are shown. Material and design requirements imposed by a refrigerator operating between room temperature and 20 K are described. Several firms which sell thermoelectric materials and devices are listed. (Author)
