A RESEARCH PROGRAM ON CONSISTENCY AND CHANGE IN SOCIAL ATTITUDES.
Abstract
This report summarizes the main findings of a research program in three separate, but related, areas. A number of studies concerned inconsistency arousal and reduction in attitude change. Our study investigated the role of an evaluation apprehension artifact in the testing of certain attitude change propositions. Other studies focused upon the modification of attitudinal cognitions through verbal reinforcement techniques. A second group of studies involved the manipulative arousal and channeling of the evaluation apprehension process. These studies delineate some of the variables affecting the extent to which that process leads to systematic biasing of research data. A last group of studies investigated the correlates of certain contrasting attitude patterns toward foreign policy issues. Confirmed in a number of separate populations were criterion group differences on authoritarianism, alienation, religious involvement and other dimensions. (Author)
