THERMOGRAVIMETRIC ANALYSIS OF ABLATIVE POLYMERS.

Abstract

Thermogravimetric analyses were performed on six samples of polymer ESR3560H, two samples of two-tone ablator, and two samples of polymer Y9089 (3M Tape). Thermograms are presented for all samples, and semiempirical kinetic equations of the thermograms are presented for the polymer ESR3560H and the two-tone ablator. Polymer ESR3560H decomposed with an apparent third-order reaction rate (n = 3) and an apparent activation energy of E = 54,700 cal/mol, while the two-tone ablator decomposed with n = 2 and E = 33,600 cal/mol. The decomposition of Y9089 (3M Tape) took place in two steps: below 380 C the decomposition followed n = 2 with E = 12,000 cal/mol and above 380 C, n = 3 with E = 41,200 cal/mol. In addition, the polymer Y9089 (3M Tape) was investigated by calorimetry. Preliminary results showed that the depolymerization reaction for this polymer is slightly exothermic, and the heat of depolymerization is of the order of -50 + or - 20 cal/g. (Author)
