CEROLYTE FUEL CELL.
Abstract
A 50-watt cerolyte fuel-cell generator was designed, constructed, and tested. This device comprises 100 bell-and-spigot cells made up into four tubular batteries -- each one about 0.5 in. in diameter and 12 in. long. These batteries, including their base tubes, weigh in total less than one pound. Operating at maximum power on H2-1/2 O2 reactants at 1050 C and 1.0 atm, the batteries produce 52 watts with a current of 1.2 amperes through each cell (corresponding to a current density of 600 ma/sq cm) and a voltage of 0.44 volts per cell. The cerolyte generator was operated for 80 hours before the failure of resistance heaters in the generator casing terminated tests. The performance of the generator was predicted accurately from experimental results on 5-cell bell-and-spigot batteries. Systems computations indicate that power/weight and power/volume for cerolyte power generators of 500-watt capacity and larger will exceed 40 watts/lb and 2.0 kw/cu ft if the electrolyte and electrode developments initiated in this work are incorporated in the system.
