ACHIEVEMENT IN BASIC TRAINING.

Abstract

This report describes what was learned in eight weeks of basic combat training under ATP 21-114 by a sample of Sixth Infantry Division trainees. Performance and written test results are reported and levels of knowledge at the outset of basic training are compared with those attained by the end of eight weeks. There was a gain of approximately 15 percent from the first to the eighth week of training on a Military Information Test consisting of 147 multiple-choice items. Test items covering Weapons Subjects showed the largest gain (19%), followed by Tactics Subjects (16%) and General Subjects (12%). Considering the relatively small gains demonstrated on this test involving fundamental material, there appears to be considerable room for improvement in the amount of learning which takes place as a result of basic training. In-the-field performance test results indicate that some skills are learned by the vast majority of trainees during the course of basic training, while others are learned by only a small minority of the men. Of the ten areas tested, the M1 rifle is the one in which the highest percentage of trainees show an acceptable degree of skill. (Author)
