RIGID WHEEL STUDIES BY MEANS OF DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS
Abstract
A successful similitude correlation of wheel performance in sand was obtained using the Bekker sinkage parameters. Tests were made in the laboratory under simulated field conditions and included an investigation of wheel sinkage, drag, and traction, as related to wheel shape, diameter, load and soil depth. A series of experiments are reported using a precision Bevameter on sand and mixtures of sand with other materials. The object of the tests was to ascertain the range over which the cohesive and frictional moduli of sinkage of a soil, could be controlled which would exert a controlling influence upon the dimensionless parameters developed. The results indicate that such control is possible to a moderate degree when using the types of materials studied.
