OPTIMIZED COHERENT OPTICAL RECEIVER TECHNIQUES.

Abstract

The high-frequency image dissector was operated in a direct modulation-demodulation experiment both in the non-scanning mode and in the scanning mode. The parameter M squared Req, which best measures sensitivity, was measured both at high light levels and low light levels (.5 milliwatts and 5 microwatts). The measured value of M squared Req of 10 to the 10th power at both power levels indicates a large dynamic range and excellent sensitivity. During this period, the high-frequency image dissector was operated as a detector of microwave-modulated light in the scanning mode for the first time. The sensitivity in the scanning mode was essentially the same as that in the non-scanning mode. The tracking system was completed during this period and is operating satisfactorily. This system will be used in experiments during the remainder of the program. (Author)
