RESEARCH STUDIES OF HIGH-DENSITY PLASMAS.

Abstract

Spectrographic observations of the high-density hydrogen theta pinch were made. Numerous impurity lines were observed with the hydrogen spectrum. Further studies indicate that these impurities are probably due to florescense of the quartz discharge tube which contains the plasma. Experimental determination of temperature of the plasma using the Doppler broadening of the H alpha spectral line were made. Experiments to determine the effect of an impurity gas on the plasma parameters were made using helium gas added to the hydrogen in percentages of 0.02%, 0.1% and 1% helium impurity. The effect on electron densities and electron temperatures are discussed. (Author)
