IONIC REACTIONS IN GASEOUS AMINES.

Abstract

Ionic reactions are reported for ammonia and the three methylamines. The major product ions are the protonated molecule ions and the higher solvates of these ions. Proton transfer, charge transfer, and hydride transfer reactions were observed in the tri-methylamine system. The rate constants for ionic reactions in this series of compounds show a slight decrease which parallels the decrease in dipole moment -- NH3<CH3NH2<(CH3)2NH<(CH3)3N -- rather than the increase in polarizability in this sequence.
