MOLECULAR WEIGHT OF FULMING ACID (DIE MOLEKULARGROESSE DER KNALLSAURE),

Abstract

Although the monocarbonic formula (CNOH) has been more or less confirmed through more recent work, the only valid confirmation for the formula are the syntheses of fulminate from monocarbonic substances, provided that a linkage of carbon is excluded. The Nef synthesis from nitromethane constitutes proof for the monocarbonic formula of fulminic acid unless, in view of the surprisingly small amount of the fulminate obtained, a secondary reaction takes place. The most reliable decision between the 2 formulas obviously is furnished only by the determination of mol. wt. of a pure substance originating from mercury fulminate and easily convertible to fulminating mercury, i.e. containing the fulminic-acid group. For determinaton of mol. wt. by lowering of freezing point in water, the sodium salt was used. The molecular weight determination of 34.86 established the constitution of the formula CNOH. The procedures are discussed.
