THE BHATNAGAR-GROSS-KROOK EQUATION AS AN APPROXIMATION OF THE BOLTZMANN EQUATION.

Abstract

The collision factor in the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook equation, the B-G-K equation, is evaluated in comparison with the collision integral in the Boltzmann equation. The deviation of the B-G-K collision factor from the Boltzmann collision integral increases as the Knudsen number increases and the deviation of the state of a gas from thermal equilibrium becomes significant. An attempt is made to rationalize the status of the B-G-K equation as a physical law. (Author)
