X-BAND TUBE-AND-CAVITY OSCILLATOR EVALUATION PROGRAM.

Abstract

The required design modification of the X-band oscillator circuitry was successfully completed and rendered significant improvements in the power output response as a function of tuning frequency. A total of 450 triode mounts were made in successive lots for performance and life evaluations. Only 150 triodes had initial dc - characteristics adequate for the required X-band operation. In attempts to correlate dc - characteristics with X-band performance it was found that emission characteristics are most critical. Triodes from the most recent lots had the best quality and demonstrated a 500 hour life capability. All triodes incorporated into the final oscillators were selected from the this lot. The 25 oscillators which were delivered exceeded the required output versus frequency response. Extensive performance evaluations revealed that power output and frequency variations as a function of either + or - 5% supply voltage change, or 30 to + or - 100 C ambient temperature, or load variation up to 2.0 VSWR, or 500G shock, or 15G vibration were within the specified limits. Gated oscillator operation during 20 usec pulses at a 2000 pulse per second rate was successfully demonstrated. (Author)
