THE LEARNING CURVE IN THE AIRFRAME INDUSTRY.

Abstract

The learning phenomenon has been defined as a constant improvement in performance of a task for proportional increases in repetitions of that task. It was initially observed in the airframe industry, but recent research indicates that it is present in many diverse industries. The presence of the learning phenomenon in production functions is primarily attributed to worker learning and management initiative; yet, many other factors contribute. In order to describe the learning phenomenon absolutely and to provide a mathematical basis for projection of values, the inverse variation or learning curve is used to represent the learning phenomenon.
