ENGINEERING TEST OF 152-MM GUN-LAUNCHER, XM81E12, AND RECOIL MECHANISM, XM551 (LIFE TEST).

Abstract

This phase of the engineering test of the 152-mm gun-launcher, XM81E12, and recoil mechanism, XM551, is being conducted to accumulate reliability and durability history. This partial report covers the firing of 1025 rounds of the scheduled 2000-round test during the period 23 September to 1 December 1965. Functioning was evaluated by firing predominately service pressure rounds and observing the performance of weapon components. Gun tubes were magnetic-particle inspected each 50 rounds and the gun-launcher and recoil mechanism were completely disassembled and inspected each 200 rounds. Functioning of the breech mechanism was excellent. The two tubes used in this test (Nos. 246 and 247) did not exhibit evidence of incipient failure after firing 525 and 400 rounds, respectively.
