SURVEY OF HIGHLY PARALLEL INFORMATION PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY AND SYSTEMS. PHASE I OF AN IMPLICATIONS STUDY,

Abstract

The purpose of this report is to present the results of a survey of the technology of highly parallel information processing technology and systems. This survey has been conducted as the first phase of a study to determine the implications to the Navy and Marine Corps of highly parallel information processing technology and systems. Completion of this study will require a survey of naval systems to determine which can benefit from the technology under consideration. The study has been directed at three major technical areas as they relate to highly parallel systems: namely: computer components, organization, and software. It is intended to achieve the following results: (1) To provide the necessary data for the later contract phase in which projected Navy computer requirements will be compared with present and projected (1965-1975) highly parallel computer technology; (2) To determine the problem areas where additional research emphasis is necessary in order to allow the smooth evolution of the technology; and (3) To provide technical background to Navy computer specialists interested in relating the technology of their primary area of interest.
