MAGNETIC COMPRESSION OF ELECTRON BEAMS.

Abstract

The effort during the first quarter was concentrated in two areas: The design of experiment in which a suitably sealed up perveance beam is compressed magnetically and electrostatically by a factor of 1000; the continuation of theoretical studies of thermal velocity effects. The design of the experiment involved computer studies to determine suitable gun and magnetic field parameters and scaling factors. Subsequently, an electron gun was designed in the electrolytic tank and experiments to produce the magnetic compression field were begun. The theoretical studies involved the reprogramming of an existing program to include thermal velocities. (Author)
