DEVELOPMENT OF A 50 KVA LABORATORY PROTOTYPE SUPERCONDUCTING AC GENERATOR.

Abstract

The objective of this exploratory development program is the completion of the superconducting generator investigations initiated under previous contracts, and culminating with the fabrication and evaluation of a 50 kva laboratory model to verify the generator performance potential predicted by such investigations. The design and fabrication effort of the laboratory model superconducting generator is divided into three areas. First, an electrical phase which provides for the field and armature components from an electrical viewpoint. Second, a heat transfer phase which provides for the removal of heat generated by the loss mechanisms of the generator. Third, a facilities phase which provides and maintains the environment package required by the superconductors. Also, the drive system and test facility for the generator is provided. This report continues the work initiated during the first three quarters. The superconducting field winding is complete and tested. The armature heat transfer analysis presented in the previous report has been continued plus results of tests verifying the analysis. Major components parts have been delivered and are being checkout out. Also checkout tests of certain assembly techniques were conducted. (Author)
