MILLIMETER AND SUBMILLIMETER COMPONENT DEVELOPMENT.

Abstract

Techniques for the design of filters, ferrite devices, diode mounts, and bulk semiconductor radiation detectors in oversize waveguide have been investigated for the millimeter and submillimeter wavelength regions. Two and four port filter structures were constructed and evaluated. Both dielectric slab filters and grating filters were examined. Oversize waveguide focused diode mounts were developed and tested. Test data of these mounts indicate their performance compares with standard waveguide detectors at 33 Gc. The design, development, and construction of Faraday rotation devices in oversize waveguide is described. Rotation of at least 45 degrees has demonstrated the feasibility at 2 mm, of isolators, modulators and circulators. Bulk semiconductors operating as heterodyne radiation detectors have been theoretically and experimentally investigated. An analysis of conversion loss and noise properties is presented. Experimental results are presented and show verification of theory. (Author)
