SINTERING BEHAVIOR OF STABILIZED ZRO2 COMPOSITIONS.

Abstract

Sintering data for yttria, dysprosia, ytterbia, and calcia-zirconia rich compositions are presented. X-ray diffraction analysis and lattice parameter measurements were used for the identification of various phases and the calculation of their x-ray densities. The completeness of solid-state reaction and the establishment of equilibrium conditions were determined by comparing fired densities to x-ray densities for the fully cubic stabilized ZrO2 solid solutions. For the two-phase, dilute, rare earth oxide samples (1-5 mole %) the degree of densification was estimated by examining microstructure photomicrographs. Comparison of microstructures with fired bulk densities enabled bulk density limits to be established for specific dilute, rare earth oxide-zirconia compositions. (Author)
