FORCE LINES, POSITIVE GRADIENT MAGNETIC FIELDS, AND CHARGED PARTICLE TRAJECTORIES IN A BASEBALL MACHINE.

Abstract

This report describes some of the magnetic field and single particle containment characteristics of a magnetic-field generating device called a baseball machine -- a coil in the configuration of the seam on a baseball. A model of the current carrying elements of the baseball machine is presented as are the axial magnetic field and some closed constant B surfaces in a containment volume such as would be generated by the machine. Some typical flux lines are shown. A computer code MINTRAP was applied to the problem and the flux lines generated by the baseball configuration were traced by the FLT-3D code, both codes being used with the IBM 7044-7094 Digital Computer. Plots of trajectories of protons with kinetic energies of 15 and 20 kev are shown graphically. (Author)
