VISUAL ANALYSIS OF DATA FROM ARRAYS AT THE WICHITA MOUNTAINS SEISMOLOGICAL OBSERVATORY.

Abstract

Four different arrays of short-period seismographs were operated at the Wichita Mountains Seismological Observatory during the past 3 years. The relative merits of essentially omnidirectional arrays compared to directional arrays for visual analysis, and the value of visual data analysis in support of machine analysis of data are discussed. Results of visual comparisons of the relative complexity of the P wave from about 50 explosions and 200 shallow earthquakes are presented. The explosions and earthquakes were located at teleseismic distances from the Wichita Mountains Seismological Observatory and were of comparable magnitudes. Included in this analysis are recordings from the same events.
