STELLAR ACQUISITION FEASIBILITY FLIGHTS (STAFF). VOLUME II - TECHNICAL.
Abstract
A review of vidicon sensitivity degradation was completed. Other aspects of the vidicon sensitivity review are in progress. Comparative performance plots were made to aid the analysis. The vidicon parametric trade-off study in progress. Material covered includes faceplate illumination characteristics, transfer function, and other vidicon/optical system interface data. The analysis is supported by plots of star persistance, zero background recovery, and other pertinent characteristics, for various star magnitudes and Schmitt levels. A probability of stellar acquisition model was formulated. The model relates signal-to-noise ratio to Schmitt level, random noise detection rate, and probability of acquisition. Preliminary material was prepared on the subject of performance improvement. Included are considerations of increased focal length, operating temperature, and sensitivity enhancement by flashed background. Inputs to the final report were drafted on photometric standards and test instrumentation. The photometric review is virtually complete. (Author)
