HIGH-PRESSURE PLASMA ARC FACILITY FOR MATERIALS EVALUATION.

Abstract

Several characteristic materials and geometric model configurations were tested in a high pressure (pilot probe pressure > 1 atm) hyperthermal plasma arc facility to determine the use of this facility for environmental re-entry simulation. A calibration of the arc plasma generator at various levels of enthalpy and pressure was made to obtain an operating map. The shear stress levels for a range of enthalpy and pressure for a 30-degree (total angle) wedge were calculated and plotted for both a 1-inch and 2-inch distance from the leading edge. (Author)
