SURVEY OF THE ARMY CARGO HELICOPTER PILOT COURSE.

Abstract

This study was designed as a general survey of the training given in the Army Basic Cargo Helicopter Pilot Course leading to the development of an objective method of measuring helicopter pilot proficiency. Patter booklets were developed for the H-13 and the H-23 helicopters containing detailed descriptions of the maneuvers taught in both primary and basic phases of instruction. To preserve the flavor of actual flight instruction each maneuver was described in a conversational manner and relied heavily on the tape recordings. Analysis of the instructor questionnaire data, supported by the flight book analysis and tape recordings of air instruction, suggested that to a considerable degree student errors tend to be specific to the maneuver being performed. Included in these results are training points which were and were not emphasized as well as suggestions for future training research.
