THE EFFECT OF FUEL CONSERVATION TRAINING ON M48 TANK GASOLINE CONSUMPTION.

Abstract

Human Research Unit Number 1 was requested by Headquarters Continental Army Command to investigate the possibilities of training drivers of tracked and wheeled vehicles in fuel economy techniques in order to reduce fuel consumption by Army vehicles. The movement of Task Force RAZOR from Camp Irwin, California to Camp Desert Rock, Nevada and back offered Unit personnel an opportunity to collect preliminary data on this problem, especially with respect to M48 tank drivers. The study was designed to fit the organizational structure of the task force, and to disturb its normal activities during the mission as little as possible. The experiment had two principal purposes: (1) to determine the effect on gasoline consumption of a brief orientation and review on techniques for conserving fuel in M48 tank operation; and (2) to determine how much drivers differ in gasoline mileage when one tank is driven by each of them in turn.
