TRAINING BASIC COMBAT SOLDIERS IN THE CRITICAL SKILLS OF MAP USING.
Abstract
A method of giving basic combat trainees more effective and economical instruction in map use was studied. Three platoons took 7-9 hours of instruction; the fourth took the conventional 10 hours of ATP instruction. After training, all four groups took three tests: the map patrol test; the map skills test; and the map reading test. Tests on skills and reading were given to pre-cycle trainess to measure pretraining levels of performance. The following are the results: the experimental method resulted in the same degree of map-using proficiency as the ATP method in less training time; high aptitude men consistently scored higher; untrained men scored equally well in tests on contour lines, marginal data, orientation by inspection, and right course; and untrained men have little or no skill in using compasses and over-all map reading.
