ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION CONTROL.
Abstract
This report presents a system concept, EICAM (Environmental Information Control for Army Materiel), for the application of computer techniques to cataloging and evaluation of environmental information. It explores a broad spectrum of uses and users, and methods of compressing data volume for machine handling of such information. The system operates in the modes of providing (1) abstract-analysis printout and (2) technical information response. The concept of abstract-analysis goes beyond conventional information retrieval in respect to computer control of search levels set by the inquirer. Emphasis is placed on the importance of standards of terminology and test procedures. Specific approaches are suggested for the organization and classification of environmental factors and test unit responses in order to lay the groundwork for handling the volume of information which must be made tractable in order for the proposed system to be successful.
