RESEARCH IN HIGH TEMPERATURE PLASMA.

Abstract

Experimental work continued on the 600-kV accelerator with beam currents as high as 80 mA. Penning-type discharges which occurred between acceleration stages in the 600-kV accelerator were successfully suppressed. Local Penning discharges in the first stage are under investigation. Improvements in beam focus, vacuum, and design details are in progress. Fabrication and installation of most of the components and auxiliary equipment for the adiabatic mirror-cusp (AMC) containment system is on schedule or has been completed. Theoretical work has been done on gas cell converter processes, injection trapping efficiency, approximate descriptions of plasma motion, and closed line of force containment systems. Efficiencies as high as 21% have been obtained in the tests of neutral beam ionization by a carbon arc, and further results have been obtained on multi-momentum injection. Included is an analysis of reaction probabilities during the slowing down of high energy reacting ions in suitable plasma and gaseous media. (Author)
