RADIATION POLYMERIZATION STUDIES AT LOW TEMPERATURES.

Abstract

This report contains the results of the polymerization or attempted polymerization of the following monomers by gamma radiation (0.000071-0.000076 rads/hr.) at low temperature (-78 C): Acrylonitrile, allyl cyanide, ethylene, fluoroethylenes, fumaronitrile, isobutene, para-nitrostyrene, perfluorobutene-2, perfluoropropylene, tetracyanoethylene, vinyl triethoxysilane, trifluoroacetaldehyde (fluoral). Acrylonitrile showed erratic results. Allyl cyanide, ethylene, perfluorobutene-2, perfluoropropylene, tetracyanoethylene and vinyl triethoxysilane were found to have extremely slow polymerization rates. The polymerization of fumaronitrile and para-nitrostyrene could not be detected. The polymerization of the fluoroethylenes, vinyl fluoride, vinylidene fluoride and trifluoroethylene is best explained by a reaction which is propagating through cationic intermediate. Attempts to copolymerize these fluorinated monomers with such co-monomers as isobutene and vinyl chloride led to the exclusive homopolymerization of the above comonomers. (Author)
