PIGA GAS SPIN BEARING PROCESS CONTROLS.

Abstract

Production processes for the PIGA gas spin bearing were investigated and evaluated. Particular emphasis was placed on cleaning processes prior to anodizing of parts and at final assembly of the bearing. Various boundary lubricants were evaluated. Three lubricants were found to be satisfactory: Fluorolube, Type S-30 (liquid); STP (liquid): and stearate of triethanolamine (waxy solid). Application techniques are described. Slew testing conducted at 135 radians per second or higher to determine bearing adequacy proved the bearing design acceptable. Start-stop testing satisfactorily proved the durability of the bearing. Evaluation of anodized beryllium rotors as a backup material for the pyroceram rotor determined the capability of beryllium rotors slew performance and start-stop durability, beryllium rotor units performed equivalent to pyroceram for the anticipated bearing life. Repeated testing, cleaning, and light lapping of study units gave evidence that units were testing satisfactorily with surface finishes and tolerances which did not meet the then current required standards. Recommendations were made for changing certain finish constraints. (Author)
