TWO-STREAM INSTABILITY,

Abstract

This paper treats an electrostatic microinstability, in a magnetized plasma, whose propagation vector is normal to the applied magnetic field in the limit when the ion Larmor radius is much larger than the wavelength. The ions are taken to have directed velocity normal to the applied magnetic field, and their kinetic energy provides the source for the growth of the instability. Physical situations where such instability arises are discussed. The results of the growth rate are presented in tabulated form. An algebraic expression that gives an approximate representation of the numerical results is also included. (Author)
