THE SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF WEDGE INTERFERENCE FRINGES. (DER RAEUMLICHE INTERFERENZSTREIFENVERLAUF DER KEILINTERFERENZEN).

Abstract

The state of knowledge about the exact spatial distribution of wedge interference fringes is advanced, with the Michelson interferometer as an example. Fresh calcualtions of the Lommel functions U1 and U2 with a computer are used to give a connected picture of the structure of these interference effects for a circular aperture stop. The description also gives both the visibility and the exact position of the fringe at each position in space for every value of aperture, wedge angle, and wavelength. An example is given to show that the surfaces of constant fringe order in space and the intensity distribution can be sketched directly for any required individual case. (Author)
