YAG CRYSTALS.

Abstract

Efforts were concentrated on growth studies aimed at producing high quality YAG crystals in a larger size range than has heretofore been possible. A major objective here is to minimize the distrubing effects on optical quality of the central tube region which is a characteristic feature of Czochralski-grown YAG. The production of larger crystals necessitated first increasing the size of the growth stations and, secondly, establishing optimum growth conditions in the new setups. The first task has been completed, but additional experimental work is required to determine how best to grow defect-free crystals in the desired size range (i.e., up to 0.75 in. diameter and 3.5 to 5 in. long). A total of eight crystals, grown in the modified stations, has been delivered in partial fulfillment of the second stage requirements specified in the contract. (Author)
